Simple Home Repair and Renovation DIY Tips for the Novice

If the thought of doing any renovations or repairs yourself makes you break out in a cold sweat, you more than likely have your handyman’s number programmed into your mobile. DIY projects need not be a chore however – the satisfaction of learning how to make small improvements here and there is well worth the patience and time required to complete basic projects.

While there are some tasks that are better left to the experts, you can save a fortune by learning how to fix basic elements in your home. Once you have gotten more confident, you can even try fun projects such as ‘upcycling’ or building your own shelves.

DIY Basics Explained

The first thing to keep in mind for any repairs around the home is to have the right tools. You can purchase basic tool kits for affordable prices or even borrow one from a friend or family member if you don’t plan on putting it to use on a longer term basis. Key items in your tool box should include a hammer or two, a wrench, spanner and a selection of screw drivers in different sizes and shapes. Pliers, household adhesive, sandpaper, a scraper and the usual assortment of nails, nuts and bolts will also come in handy once you get more into repair projects.

Some basic repairs that you can easily do yourself include the following:

·     Hanging – you can use plastic coated safety nails to hang paintings or photographs on your wall. If you will need to drill a hole in the wall however, you might want to ask your handyman service to assist with this step.

·     Door knobs and other fittings – replacing door knobs, handles, numerals and even hinges can be done with the help of your screwdriver collection, hammer and extra nails. If you struggle to unscrew very small nails, you can even use the edge of a butter knife.

·     Curtain rails – if you want to change from curtain rails to wooden loop style curtains, you can complete this process armed with a chair or secure ladder, along with a bit of patience. Replace the hooks with the wooden rings you purchased along with the curtains while you are sitting down, and then return them to the rail from the far edge inward on each side.

·     Wallpaper – this job can get messy, and takes a fair amount of patience and concentration. It is often easier to wallpaper parts of the wall with a band of colour or print. Start from the bottom left corner and work your way along the bottom edge, smoothing each piece as you go along. Adhesive wall art is a lot easier to place, with no glue or mess involved.

Once you get the hang of trying small fixes on your own, it becomes a lot easier to manage other projects. And if all else fails, your favourite handyman will always be around to help you out.

Art Deco - Almost 100 Years Old and Still Has Its Place

The term Art Deco can generate a range of emotions dependent on a person's age and tastes, but many speak about this design style as an era referring to a period in the 1960's. Well known for its influences in architecture, jewellery design and artwork, you may be surprised to learn that the Art Deco style remains extremely popular in interior design today. Not necessarily known as Art Deco, the modern home décor now uses many of its design concepts such as clean lines and symmetry.

At it's best; Art Deco represents elegance, glamour, functionality and modernity all of which can be achieved in the modern home through the use of mirrors.

The birth of Art Deco was actually much earlier than the 1960's and came to life in Paris at the turn of the century when a movement was taking place which changed the way art and design was viewed by the wider world. In Paris 'La Societe des Artistes Decorateurs' was being formed. It wasn't until the 1920s and the 1930s that the movement came to light however, as it did in all its splendour at the International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Art in the French capital in 1925.

Following the First World War, Europe was faced with a massive rebuilding task, whilst the U.S was also struggling to rebuild its economy after the 1929 Great Depression, it is therefore surprising that the period over the 1920's and 30's had such a lot to offer and shaped the way we live our lives today.

It wasn't long after this time that the 'Decorative Arts Society' movement gathered steam and its famous curvilinear designs started cropping up in places such as the Paris Metro and the famous Chrysler Building and Radio City Music Hall in the U.S.

It was actually the Art Deco name itself, which became popular in the 1960s, when Bevis Hillier in his popular "Art Deco of the 20's and 30's publication" coined the phrase.

Not to be confused with its predecessor Art Nouveau, a design style known for its asymmetrical curves and flowing patterns encapsulating political and philosophical intentions, Art Deco's linear symmetry draws inspiration from ancient Egyptian and Aztec times and is purely decorative. An innocent style that simply suits raw materials such as glass, it is not surprising that modern mirrors showcase this design movement so well.

In a time where minimalism, simplicity and block colours are so popular, Art Décor Mirrors can add elegance and glamour into the modern home. A great example of an Art Deco style mirror is one that is made of plain glass with no frame, often with beveled edges or symmetrical designs, the simplicity of these mirrors often means that they sparkle in the light and work well with almost any room décor.

It is hard to believe that by including what may be considered a relatively plain mirror into your room design, is actually reflecting a design period from almost 100 years ago.. and it still works!
